As a founder of PORCH and Orange County Living Wage, I bring to the Board of Aldermen a proven track record for finding practical, impactful solutions to local issues. I also bring to the Board much needed representation from the northern neighborhoods of Carrboro, where I have lived for the past 15 years. It would be an honor to share these unique perspectives as the town charts its course on affordability, density, environmental responsibility, equity, and fiscal sustainability over the next decade.

My Vision

My vision for Carrboro is comprehensive and seeks to maintain the town’s unique character while also moving forward. I will work to:

* Create more affordability
* Develop in a way consistent with the look and feel of the town
* Offer stability and opportunity through community banking
* Broaden the commercial tax base
* Support locally-owned small businesses
* Prioritize climate control and stormwater protection
* Protect Bolin Creek and the surrounding forest
* Promote public-private partnerships to strengthen the safety net
* Celebrate and foster diversity and equity.

The daughter of educators, Susan was raised in a suburban Washington, DC, household that prized public education and community service. With degrees in history and public policy, Susan worked to promote the public good first as a legislative aide for US Representative Harley O. Staggers, Jr. and then with Tax Equity Alliance for Massachusetts (TEAM) and the Service Employees International Union (SEIU).

Susan and her family brought their commitment to community service to Carrboro in 2004, where she joined her neighbors to create the hunger relief organization PORCH. Susan then tackled the challenges of low wages by starting Orange County Living Wage. Community service remains a guiding principle of her life and her impetus to further serve Carrboro on the Board of Aldermen.
